ICC Executive Board meets to set business priorities

ICC Chairman Jean-René Fourtou

Paris, 5 March 2004 - ICC's Executive Board convened here today bringing together business leaders from all over the world to set the next priorities for the world business organization.

ICC Chairman Jean-René Fourtou used the meeting to establish the themes to be addressed in ICC's annual presentation to the Summit of G8 leaders meeting in Georgia, USA in June.

The top business executives agreed to stress to the heads of state and government participating in the G8 Summit the importance of multilateral rules to manage and strengthen the global economy. They insisted that governments must remain committed to the completion of the Doha round of trade negotiations.

ICC will promote these key messages to G8 leaders during its forthcoming World Congress in Marrakesh (6-9 June), which will be drawing to a close as the G8 Summit opens.

Today's meeting also heard from French Institute for International Relations Senior Adviser Dominique Moïsi as guest speaker.

In an address on "Europe after enlargement: the implications for business worldwide", Mr Moïsi said that business should not fear European enlargement but rather should be concerned with the "broader breakdown of civilized rule of law in international trade relations".

ICC's Executive Board comprises leading business figures from more than 20 countries. Today's meeting attracted top-ranking executives from as far afield as Brazil, Canada, China, Egypt, India, Korea, Morocco, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Thailand, Turkey, the USA and as well as many European countries.

Mr Fourtou was joined at the meeting by fellow members of the three-member ICC Chairmanship, Yong Sung Park (Korea) and Richard D. McCormick (United States).
