Record media coverage for ICC congress

Wesley K. Clark and Martti Ahtisaari on World Business Report

Paris, 9 July 2004 - The International Chamber of Commerce's 35th World Congress, held in Marrakesh from 6-9 June, attracted an unprecedented amount of media attention from newspapers, magazines, news wires and television stations around the world.

A total of 150 journalists attended the congress generating more than 70 news articles in publications ranging from The New York Times in the US to the Financial Times, The Economist, Le Figaro (France), and Il Sole (Italy) in Europe; from Le Matin and The Western Sahara in Morocco to The Korea Times and The Business Times (Singapore) in Asia. Thirty stories were released on Bloomberg and AFX, among other wire services, and were picked up by thousands of newspapers worldwide.

Television coverage of the event outstripped the amount of airtime for all previous ICC congresses - 3.5 hours in total. CNBC Europe and Bloomberg TV sent satellite trucks and presenters to Marrakesh to produce live reports from the congress that fed into televised discussions about ICC and its work back in the London studios. BBC, CNN, Euronews, Star World Asia, PBS (USA), France 3, Expansion (Spain), CFN CNBC Italia, RTL and Deutsche Welle (Germany) were just some of the other broadcasters and networks to cover the congress. In all, more than 43 television reports on the congress were aired, reaching over 250 million homes and offices worldwide.

FactBased Communications, an independent television production company, travelled to Marrakesh to present the first half of its 'World Business' show from the ICC congress. The programme included a 10-minute report on the congress and a roundtable interview with former NATO Supreme Commander and recent US Presidential aspirant Wesley K. Clark, and Martti Ahtisaari, Chairman of the International Crisis Group and former President of Finland. It aired primetime on CNBC Europe and was distributed in over 100 countries by PBS-TV, CNBC Europe, Star World Asia and Euronews.

Another production company, World Television, chose the ICC congress as a backdrop to the first programme in its new series 'The Business of Development'. The show focussed on the World Business Awards, a joint initiative of ICC, the United Nations Development Programme and the International Business Leaders Forum to honour efforts undertaken in the private sector to help realise the United Nations Millennium Development Goals (www.iccwbo.org/awards/). The programme is scheduled to be broadcast on CNBC Europe on 22 July and on CNBC World at a later date, reaching over 100 million homes and businesses worldwide.

Business and political leaders interviewed by broadcasters at the Congress included:
- Sheikha Lubna Al Qasimi, CEO, Tejari.com, UAE;
- Martti Ahtisaari, Chairman International Crisis Group, Brussels; President of Finland (1994-2000);

The custom-made ICC Congress website (www.iccwbo.org/congress) also proved a hit, attracting 33,000 visitors to date since its launch in April this year. The site features stories and downloadable photographs from the congress, as well as a two-minute television advertisement for the event, giving a brief overview of the main congress themes.
