ICC
reaffirms commitment to young entrepreneurs

| ICC
and JCI reconfirm their partnership |
Paris,
4 March 2004
- Twenty years to the month since the signing of their first co-operation
agreement, ICC and Junior Chamber International (JCI) leaders met today
in Paris to reaffirm their commitment to the entrepreneurs of tomorrow.
ICC Chairman, Jean-René
Fourtou and Secretary General, Maria Livanos Cattaui, welcomed Junior
Chamber International (JCI) President, Fernando Sanchez-Arias, and Interim
Secretary General, Edson Kodama, to ICC Headquarters where they commemorated
the anniversary of the ICC-JCI partnership.
They reinforced their
association with the signing of a new Working & Cooperation Agreement.
Signing the agreement,
both ICC and JCI, a worldwide federation of professionals and entrepreneurs
under 40 years of age, acknowledged their shared objective of advancing
global economic progress. They promised to promote each others activities
and "work together to develop joint projects of mutual interest"
to their members.
Speaking after the
signing ceremony, ICC Secretary General, Maria Livanos Cattaui said the
ICC-JCI relationship would continue to expand coming years.
"JCI is a vibrant
institution," she said. "They develop the entrepreneurial and
leadership skills needed to generate positive changes in their communities,
their countries, and the world.
"Since its foundation,
JCI has helped millions of young people develop personally and professionally.
Many of them have become high government officials or important members
of their respective professional and business communities. Thousands are
active in the world chamber movement at various levels.
"ICC's objectives
are very similar to those of JCI - we both wish to foster entrepreneurship
and facilitate the conduct of trade across borders."
Under the terms of
the new agreement, both organizations have also agreed to continue successful
award schemes such as the ICC Business Medal for outstanding chamber projects
that promote free enterprise and the JCI Best Business Plan Competition
- for which ICC's World Chambers Federation has been a judge for the last
two years.
As part of their continued
cooperation JCI said it hoped to bring a delegation to ICC's 35th World
Congress in Marrakesh 6 -9 June.
Other terms of the
agreement include:
- Both organizations
will assist each other in making their activities more widely known,
in particularly through
their respective contacts in countries where
one of the organizations is less represented than the other, most notably
Africa and the Middle East.
- Both organizations
will invite each other to send representatives to their general assemblies,
conferences, and congresses, at an international, transnational and
national level.
- ICC training programs
will be promoted to JCI members.
