Secretary General, Maria Livanos Cattaui welcomes Sharif Saidov, Chairman
of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Republic of Tajikistan |
Paris,
22 December 2004
-- ICC Secretary General, Maria Livanos Cattaui yesterday welcomed Sharif
Saidov, Chairman of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Republic
of Tajikistan, to ICC headquarters during his first official visit as
a new member.
The chamber joined
ICC in the first half of 2004.
Mrs Cattaui said:"We are delighted that the chamber is our first
member from this country and look forward to working together to strengthen
ICC's presence there.
"The addition of Tajikistan as a member of ICC's global network of
members is an important step for the promotion of the work of ICC within
Central Asia's international business community."
During the meeting, Mr Saidov gave an overview of Tajikistan, a country
in the early stages of seeking World Trade Organization membership.
"We are honoured
and proud to represent business as part of this world business organization",
he said.
"Tajikistan has
experienced steady economic growth since 1997. It has implemented significant
economic reforms - including the restructuring of its economy - and has
developed international relations and integrated itself into the global
economy. ICC membership is an essential step for us to help our own members
operate internationally", he said.
Mr Saidov underscored
that as part of economic reforms, Tajikistan is opening up to foreign
investment, but concluded by saying that there was much more potential
for development. A total of 63 available investment projects in the country
will be posted online on ICC's World Chambers Network Business Opportunities
service.
The chamber will also
work closely with ICC's World Chambers Federation to open up the ICC family
of chambers around the world and strengthen links between them.
