Secretary General completes third and final mandate

term with the world business organization on 30 June |
Paris,
15 June 2005
ICC announced that its current Secretary General, Maria Livanos
Cattaui, will conclude her third and final term with the world business
organization on 30 June 2005, as planned. Mrs Cattaui has been Secretary
General of ICC since her appointment by the ICC World Council in 1996.
Mrs Cattaui has worked hard to champion the role of business and the global
economy. She has placed ICC at the vanguard of international policymaking
on trade and investment, protection of intellectual property, the information
society, as well as other vital issues for business. In so doing, she
has raised the public profile of ICC as the world business organization
and made it a more vigorous advocate of business in dealings with international
organizations and governments.
Mrs Cattaui has been instrumental in establishing strong working relations
between ICC and the United Nations leading to greater business input into
UN economic activities.
She has been closely
involved in enhancing business know-how and experience in developing countries
and in attracting foreign direct investment. Mrs Cattaui has had numerous
articles published in the world's press on the need to open up markets
worldwide to ensure the benefits of a global economy reach many more people.
Chairmen of ICC who have worked with Mrs Cattaui expressed their gratitude
for the job she has done.
Helmut Maucher (ICC Chairman 1997-1998), former Chairman and CEO of Nestlé,
said: "Maria brought life into ICC. She raised awareness among companies
and beyond for what actually matters in the globalizing environment for
businesses of all sectors and all sizes. She modernized the issues discussed
in the different parts of the organization so ICC is well prepared for
the 21st century."
Adnan Kassar (1999-2000), Chairman and CEO of Fransabank Group, said:
"During my tenure as ICC Chairman, I had the pleasure of working
closely with Maria who always brought vitality and energy to all of ICC's
activities and functions. We had the satisfaction of working together
to increase the number of ICC national committees around the world, and
thus further spread the organization's global reach."
Richard D. McCormick (2000-2002), Chairman Emeritus of US West, said:
"There are few people who could bring the same talent and dedication
to their work as Maria Cattaui. Her commitment to furthering the global
influence of ICC and raising its profile among companies and governments
has been unfaltering. She has been a superb Secretary General. It has
been a pleasure to work with her on many critical issues facing business
and countries around the world."
"Maria brought exactly the kind of dynamism and energy to the work
of ICC that I believe is required to maintain the organization's proud
claim to being the voice of world business," said Jean-René
Fourtou, (2002-2004), Chairman of Vivendi Universal.
Mrs Cattaui said: "It has been an honour to serve as Secretary General
at this outstanding institution. I am confident that ICC will continue
to grow in stature and importance, reflecting its role as the world's
truly global business organization, the authoritative voice of business
everywhere."
Mrs Cattaui's successor will be appointed by ICC's World Council, which
will meet on the occasion of ICC's
World Chambers Congress in Durban later this month.
