World business leaders to meet Syrian President

Damascus, 19 December 2000 - A delegation of world business leaders meets with Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad tomorrow in a show of support for his plans to further liberalize the Syrian economy.

ICC President Adnan Kassar will lead the delegation to Damascus to explore ways in which ICC - the world business organization - can contribute to the Syrian economic reform process.

President Bashar recently announced his intention to open the Syrian market to competition, including the establishment of a stock market and the creation of private banks for the first time in 37 years.

Mr Kassar, in one of his l ast duties as ICC President, will use the occasion to introduce President Bashar to the work ICC is doing on behalf of its more than 7,000 member companies to open markets around the world and facilitate the smooth running of the global economy.

ICC President-elect, Richard D. McCormick will also join the delegation, which includes Richard Greenhalgh, Chairman of Unilever UK. The business leaders are expected to use the visit to outline ICC plans to help developing countries and transition economies benefit from globalization.

With its thousands of member companies of every size in more than 130 countries, ICC is the only truly global representative of world business. It has top-level consultative status with the United Nations.

The ICC delegation will explore ways in which ICC can help Syria's fledgling market economy better access and exploit opportunities presented by the new global economy.
