September 11, 2001 - world business reacts -
The terror attacks which struck the United States, September 11, 2001 have provoked an extraordinary reaction from businesses all over the world.
From messages of support to pledges of financial or material assistance, companies have rallied in a remarkable show of solidarity.
In the week since the attack, ICC has fielded countless inquiries from its members on how best to convey the depth of their concern.
This online forum has been designed to give expression to this sentiment.
It is by no means comprehensive, and is certainly not intended to advertise individual acts of business philanthropy. Rather, the forum reflects the intensity - and global breadth - of the business respon
se to this tragedy.
Some of the messages come directly from the websites of concerned companies, others have been written exclusively for this forum.
All of them reflect a world business community united in its condemnation of terrorism and determined to honour the victims by continuing to build a global economy to improve the lives of people everywhere.
Any company or business association wishing to contribute to this forum should contact Dawn Bartram - Click here to send a mail.

I fully condemn violence of any sort against any country of the World. The recent attacks on the United States and its nation were of the most horrific nature. The present situation, which may develop badly in the future, makes us strengthen our efforts to increase the use of local energy sources and thus reduce our dependence on energy sources located in politically sensitive areas of the world.
Yours sincerely,
Raimo Sopo CEO

Aventis Pasteur, the vaccine business of Aventis, has provided 50,000 doses of tetanus vaccines to the New York City Public Health Department for distribution to area hospitals. Another 3,000 doses were donated to the New Jersey's health department in connection with the New York City relief effort and were distributed to hospitals in neighboring New Jersey.

Citigroup
As the tragedy of the terrorist attacks in New York City and Washington continues to unfold, our deepest heartfelt sympathies go out to the families of the countless victims, as well as to all of our clients, customers and friends who have been affected by this terrible event.
At this time, we believe that four Citibank employees who may have been visiting customers within the World Trade Center are missing. We continue to hope for their rescue along with that of all the individuals still unaccounted for in both New York and Washington.
Over the past few days, we have been overwhelmed by the support and concern expressed by many of you in the international investment community for our employees and our families. We are extremely grateful for the phone calls and e-mails we have received.
We have announced a $15M contribution to a newly-created Citigroup Relief Fund that will provide scholarships to the children of victims of this tragic event. The courage and heroism of the firefighters, police officers, and other rescue workers has touched us all. CO2e.com
Three of our friends and colleagues from our headquarters inside Cantor Fitzgerald on the 101st floor of One World Trade Center, New York, are missing following the disaster which struck on Tuesday 11 September 2001.
Carlton Bartels, our CEO and founder; founder of Cantor Fitzgerald Environmental Brokerage Services; a visionary and consummate professional, well loved and respected in the international climate change community.
Adam White, head of our technology division, a truly extraordinary person with immense drive, and an inspiration to us all.
John Willett, responsible for keeping us all operational; patient, good humoured, effective, and the hub of The Global Hub for Carbon Commerce.
Sadly, we are still not aware of anyone who was in the Cantor Fitzgerald offices at floors 101 to 105 of One World Trade Centre who is on the list of employees who have been confirmed as safe.
CO2e.com is a small, tightly knit team who all count each other as friends. This appalling event has left a huge hole in our hearts. We have received hundreds of enquiries, offers of support and tributes from friends and colleagues of John, Adam and Carlton, which stand as a true testament to them.

Nestlé
On behalf of all the Nestlé family, and together with other members of the international business community, I want to tell our American friends that we share their sorrow and shock and that we think of them in these bitter hours. These mindless acts of terrorism illustrate that in our shrinking world mankind cannot do without respect for other cultures, without tolerance and compassion. They form an integral part of our values here at Nestlé and it is in moments like these that we fully appreciate their importance. Many of the people working for Nestlé told us that this tragedy has made them want to get involved, to help those in need. We have encouraged them to do so. The Nestlé Group and in particular Nestlé USA has responded as an organisation as well: We have donated $100,000 to the American Red Cross; many employees are making additional cash donations to the disaster relief efforts. A number of our divisions have donated food products, our water subsidiary Perrier-Vittel provided through Americares and directly bottled water for the crews from fire, police, emergency, medical and volunteer rescue teams and blood banks, and Alcon, our ophtalmological branch, has donated saline solution, liquids to clean the eyes from the dust and antibiotics to area hospitals and triage centers. At our own Freehold, New Jersey coffee plant, we've opened our cafeteria to soldiers at the Army reserve station right across from the plant. All this is not more than a drop in the bucke
t compared to the grief and suffering, but it gives our people an opportunity to do something in this time of great strain. What is important for all of us: The terrorist acts of September 11 have not weakened the USA but have strengthened its resolve. It is times like these when America really shows its true colours. Always remember: Out of adversity comes greatness! Our heart goes out to our friends in the USA and to all the victims of hatred and terror. Peter Brabeck CEO of Nestlé SA, Switzerland

Nike
We as a global company strongly condemn any act of terrorism anywhere, by any means. Our hearts go out to the families and friends of the victims, including those of the rescue workers who were killed or are still missing.
While we continue to be tremendously saddened by the horrific events of Sept. 11, 2001, we are now focusing our efforts on assisting in the relief efforts and in heeding President Bush's directive to get back to business as quickly as possible.
Both local and national Red Cross agencies have identified immediate financial support as their most critical need. For that reason, the Nike Foundation has been collecting contributions from individual Nike employees and factory partners across the country and throughout the world. Through matching funds, Nike is making a $1 million contribution to the American Red Cross and a variety of other local relief organizations.
Nike also is working with relief agencies in New York, Washington D.C. and Pennsylvania to provide donations of Nike products for victims who are affected by these tragic circumstances, as well as for those involved in the rescue and recovery efforts. These donations include more than 14,000 t-shirts, 11,400 pairs of socks, 1,200 pairs of Nike ACG work boots, 1,000 towels, plus hundreds of pairs of shoes, warm-ups, jackets, sweat shirts and gym bags for rescue workers to store their personal belongings.
Nike and Niketown New York will continue to liaise with relief and government agencies and provide as much requested product as possible for fire and rescue personnel. To date, more than $300,000 in Nike products have been delivered or are on their way to New York relief agencies.
Finally, Nike US employees will participate in a Red Cross blood drive on Sept. 24-25 at its Beaverton-based world headquarters.
Nokia
All of us at Nokia are stunned and deeply saddened by the recent tragedies in the United States. We extend our sympathies and condolences to the victims and their families from the United States and abroad who have been affected. Our thoughts are also with those who are working tirelessly in the recovery and rescue efforts, and to those who are helping to alleviate the suffering and protect the public. We are also working closely with our logistics and business teams to insure that business runs smoothly for our customers, employees, shareholders, partners and the rest of the extended Nokia enterprise. Nokia has established, in coordination with the International Youth Foundation, a global Education Fund for the children that have lost a parent or parents in this unfortunate tragedy with an initial corporate grant of 1 million USD. Our rationale for this is simple; we need to do something that has a long-term and lasting effect. We need to think about the future. Nokia and its employees are contributing to the American Red Cross as well as to the emergency relief efforts through donations of cellular phones, extra batteries, chargers and technology engineering expertise. You too can provide support at
