Letters of credit provide the finance for more than US$1 trillion of world trade a year – some 15%. To help clarify practitioners’ rights vis-à-vis these vital documents, the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) is organizing an interactive workshop at its Paris headquarters on 26 October 2005.
The workshop will be directed by King Tak Fung, a partner in the Hong Kong office of DLA Piper Rudnick Gray Cary and author of Leading Court Cases on Letters of Credit (available from

).
“In addition to explaining the crux of letters of credit, the workshop will help participants to prevent trade and banking fraud and to resolve trade disputes in an effective and creative manner,” said Mr Fung, who has conducted numerous legal and banking workshops in Asia and Europe.
The Paris workshop will provide in-depth analysis of actual court cases involving letters of credit. Concentrating on practical advice from legal, banking and commercial perspectives, the workshop is tailor-made for bankers, lawyers, business executives and trade finance practitioners.
Among the many issues to be dealt with:
-
How to ensure that the seller can recover his goods if the buyer defaults in payment;
-
How to avoid pitfalls in letters of credit negotiation – value given, timing amount, documentary evidence and operations procedures;
-
How to resolve disputes by mediation instead of litigation; and
-
L/C Dispute Resolution with China.
