As more Latin American economies open up to world trade, international disputes arise that need an understanding of local legal cultures and attitudes if they are to be resolved satisfactorily. To shed light on this crucial matter, ICC is holding a conference in Miami, Florida, on 6-8 November 2005 which will deal with aspects of international commercial arbitration that are particularly relevant to Latin American cases.

The ICC International Court of Arbitration, which provides the most trusted system of commercial arbitration in the world, has been increasingly in demand for its services in Latin America. In 2004, of the 1 682 parties involved in cases worldwide filed with the Court, more than 11.5% came from Latin America. The Miami conference will be the third to be held annually on South and Central American arbitration.

Horacio A. Grigera Naon, international arbitrator and former Secretary General of the ICC Court, explained the importance of the event: “The growing and accelerated expansion of international commercial arbitration in Latin America is now not only reflected through the increase in the number of cases and amounts in dispute, but also the complexity of the legal problems raised by arbitral proceedings in or relating to the region. However, there are few international fora where these problems are specifically addressed with the participation of players with long experience in Latin American arbitration.”

“This conference, by touching on some of the most important and challenging problems faced by international arbitration in this region from the ICC perspective, will offer practitioners from all over the world a rare opportunity to understand and find ways to address such problems from an insider’s perspective.”

Discussion topics will thus be of particular interest to practising lawyers, corporate counsel, business professionals and academics who come from Latin America or do business there, or simply wish to add to their understanding of international commercial arbitration in the region. The languages of the conference will be Spanish and English, with simultaneous interpretation.
