What are the options when disputes arise over international construction contracts? How can these disputes be resolved in a timely and cost-efficient manner? These questions will be answered at the 6th International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) and International Federation of Consulting Engineers (FIDIC) Conference on International Construction Contracts to take place on 3-4 July in Hong Kong.
Engineers, contractors, employers, arbitrators and legal advisors in the field of international construction will gather to hear renowned experts review the procedure for claims and disputes under FIDIC Conditions of Contract, the most widely used standard forms of international construction contract.
The conference will offer delegates the opportunity to participate in interactive discussions on various public and private FIDIC contract forms, in particular the new Multilateral Development Bank (MDB) harmonized construction contract, the Red, Yellow and Silver books.
“The growth of construction disputes in Asia makes this conference remarkably important for anybody practicing in the field,” said Toshio Sawada, Vice-Chairman of the ICC International Court of Arbitration.
Christopher Seppälä, the Legal Advisor of the FIDIC Contracts Committee and Alternate Member of the ICC International Court of Arbitration, said: “The conference is undoubtedly an important event on the calendar as it will be the first time that the latest (1999) edition of FIDIC’s standard forms of contract and FIDIC's new 2006 MDB harmonized form of contract are presented at a major conference in Asia. Given the importance of international construction in Asia today, especially China, it is very fitting for this event to take place in Hong Kong.”
“ICC and FIDIC have once again teamed up to host this two-day conference as contracts based on FIDIC’s standard forms typically provide for the final resolution of disputes under the ICC Rules of Arbitration in the English language,” Mr Seppälä added.
The ICC International Court of Arbitration is the leading body in international commercial arbitration. Founded to resolve business disputes of an international character, its strict impartiality and effectiveness are recognized everywhere. Countless business contracts, including many where one party is a government body, refer to the ICC Rules of Arbitration.
FIDIC is the French acronym for the International Federation of Consulting Engineers. It was founded in 1913 to promote the professional interests of member associations and to disseminate information of interest to members of its national associations. FIDIC membership currently numbers 73 associations from all parts of the globe and represents most of the practicing consulting engineers in the world.
